Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez Set For UFC 205

Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez set to clash for lightweight title at UFC 205 in New York.

Fight fans around the world can rejoice as it was announced on Monday evening that Conor McGregor will challenge lightweight king Eddie Alvarez for his 155-pound title at UFC 205 in New York.

The announcement comes as no real shock as for the past month or so rumours of the potential match-up being added to the UFC's inaugural card in New York ran through the mixed martial arts world like wildfire.

McGregor (20-3) successfully avenged his only UFC loss at the hands of Nate Diaz last month. The two had an epic five-round rematch of their UFC 196 encounter where Diaz submitted McGregor in the second-round last March. This time, it was the Irishman who came out on top thanks to a majority decision victory. Since winning the 145-pound title in December of 2015, McGregor has yet to defend it and this most recent fight booking is sure to ruffle more feathers of the title contenders within the featherweight division.

Alvarez (28-4) recently extended his win streak to three with a first round destruction of Rafael dos Anjos in July to capture the UFC lightweight title. Alvarez has been considered one of the best 155-pound fighters outside of the UFC and since his signing back in 2014 has proved those thoughts to be true. After dropping his debut to Donald Cerrone, Alvarez beat Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, and former champion Rafael dos Anjos.

These two champions share a combined 32 KO victories between them which makes for a very exciting match-up on paper. Will McGregor be able to land his trademark shots or will Alvarez be able to out wrestle and out box the biggest star  the UFC has ever seen.

UFC 205 takes place November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. McGregor vs. Alvarez will headline the card which has yet to be finalised.
