Let's Discuss The Royal Rumble 2016

The Royal Rumble finally took place… AND REIGNS DID NOT WIN. I REPEAT: ROMAN REIGNS DID NOT WIN! HOLY CRAP! That alone made the Pay-Per-View worth watching. To be honest, the entire thing was fantastic. It's probably the first great PPV we have gotten since last year's Mania. There was not a bad match, we got surprises left and right and depending on how you see it, there was no huge booking mistake. Also, for the first time in God knows how long, booking seems to be thinking long term. I left the PPV with a better idea of what the Mania card is going to look like. This is why I watch wrestling, and you don't know how happy I am to write an article in which I'm not bitching about the product.

Let's get the vegetables out of the way. Kalisto vs. Del Rio was the worst bout of the PPV. The match wasn't bad per say, but when you compare it to the rest of the event, it was just alright. I am glad Kalisto regained the title. Hopefully this time it'll last longer than 1 day.

Now, let's talk about the good stuff. The PPV started with this year’s first ‘Match of the Year’ candidate. Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens went out there with a mission: stealing the show. Well...mission accomplished. Their match was fantastic! Well paced, physical and unpredictable. Some of the spots they did with tables and chairs were pretty dangerous, but they still went out there and did their thing. While I'm happy to see Ambrose retain, I'm anxious to see where Owens is going after this.

Then, The New Day and The Usos went out there and had a solid ass match. The best part was New Day’s promo before the match. Without spoiling too much, the trombone is back, better than ever! Also, Big E hit the best Big Ending he has ever done. New Day retains the titles, solidifying themselves as the division's best tag team.

Almost forgot to mention, shout out to the Orlando crowd! They were fantastic! Literally, my perfect type of crowd. Super loud, without being disrespectful. They cheered for Dean, New Day, Becky, AJ and all the other babyfaces. More importantly, they HATED Reigns. Which was kind of cool. More on that later.

The last match before the main event had Charlotte defending the Divas' title against the beautiful Becky Lynch. Now, they had a decent match. I enjoyed their work, even if I thought the pacing was a bit off. Best part was probably seeing Ric's horny ass lip locking Becky. Eventually, Charlotte won (thanks to an interference from the nature boy), and everyone's just like: well that's disappointing. When all of a sudden, SASHA BANKS SHOWS UP! She's back! People go insane (second biggest pop of the night) and she basically puts herself in the title picture. Ideally, we would be seeing a triple threat Mania match for the Divas title between Sasha Banks, Charlotte and Becky Lynch. Delicious!

Now, let's talk about the Rumble match. I'll keep it short and sweet in case you haven't seen the match. It was pretty damn good. It had it all! AJ Styles debuting at number 3 (WTF?) was super unexpected, and the crowd gave one of the loudest pops I've seen in a long time. It was so weird and exciting to see him in a WWE ring with the like of Y2J, Reigns and Lesnar. The constant fear of him getting eliminated and Reigns winning it again had me on the edge of my seat. And there were funny moments like Truth trying to get the Money In The Bank briefcase (about 5 months too late, buddy). At the end, HHH got it. And while some people are upset, I'm just like: Anyone but you Roman...Anyone but you. Also, the match's booking was super good. Lesnar will be starting a feud with the Wyatt family. Owens is going against Styles. And HHH will be fighting Reigns. Exciting times are ahead. I haven't been this excited to see Monday Night RAW in a long time.
