Can Open World Games Have a Good Story?

I recently had the pleasure of reviewingThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and one of the issues I had with the game was the fact that the story, while being pretty good, didn’t reach the level of awesomeness I thought it would. After giving it some thought I realized The Witcher is not the only game that’s guilty of having a lack luster story. Watch Dogs, Shadow of Mordor, AC Unity and Dying Light are just some of the games that come to mind. What do all of these games have in common? They’re all big open world games.

Now, I love open world games. There’s something special in visiting a beautiful, huge open world filled with interesting characters and tons of content. But it does become a problem when the scale of a game interferes with its ability to tell a great story. It’s definitely possible to have a huge game with a good story. Rockstar proves it time after time with games like Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption. However, most of the open world games that came out on the last year failed to deliver.

Is there a formula to follow? I’m not really sure. For now, I can just hope some of the huge games coming soon (Arkham Knight, MGS V, hopefully Fallout 4) deliver a memorable story. What do you think about this? Let me know on Twitter!
